Columbia County Cemeteries Collection

The Columbia County Cemeteries Collection contains a wealth of information that can be used by genealogists, families, and citizens of our community who are looking for information on their family ancestry.  This collection will eventually contain more than 900 records including headstone photographs along with some family photographs, plot deed records from the city of Starbuck, and some deed records from the City of Dayton.  The collection contains cemetery information including headstone photographs and descriptions from the Starbuck Cemetery, Lot A from the Dayton cemetery, and eight county cemeteries including Bundy Hollow, Covello, Highland, Huntsville, Marengo, Pioneer Memorial, Smith Hollow, and Turner Cemeteries.

If anyone has additional family photographs that can be included along with a headstone in this collection, please contact the Columbia County Rural Library District.

Early Columbia County School Photographs Collection

This collection contains original photographs of school houses, some showing just the building while others include students or other people in the photograph.  Some of the photographs show more than one school building for a school district at different times, eras, and locations.  At one time, there were as many as 61 school districts with 54 of them having school buildings.

If anyone has additional photographs of schools not yet included in the collection, contact the Columbia County Rural Library District so additional photographs can be added to the collection.  In addition, help us identify some of the students in the photographs.  If you can identify and unidentified student, please contact us so that information can be added to the collection data.

Rights & Use

Many items from the Columbia County Heritage Collection are under protection of copyright.  You must contact the Columbia County Rural Library District for permission to use the items in this collection.

Original photographs were provided by the Blue Mountain Heritage Society.  The primary source of information about each of the schools was provided through the book "Early Columbia Schools" compiled by Charlotte Hutchens, or from the revised version, "History of Early Columbia County Schools" bu Rachel Laberge and Patricia Schlacter.  Visit the Blue Mountain Heritage Society to view original photographs.

About This Site

Columbia County Heritage is a project of Washington Rural Heritage, a collection of historically significant materials residing in libraries, heritage institutions, and private collections throughout Washington State.  The collection includes photographs, documents, and artifacts which tell the stories of Washington's small and rural communities.

Columbia County Rural Library District

Columbia County Rural Library District is located in the SE corner of Washington State, and based in Dayton, Washington.  The Library District is a newly formed library district in Washington State, having been formed in 2005 with services being provided to a population of 4,100 residents beginning January 1, 2008 in a city-owned building.  The library district provides materials for all ages, including books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, audiocassettes, videocassettes, Pacific Northwest history, reference and genealogical materials.  The Library District offers online services, a teen MySpace page, and a blog through their website.
