| Description | Women pick strawberries in Doctor Frank Sanford Hedger's fields near his home. Hedger was an early settler of the area and the first coroner for the newly formed Benton County. He had two sons, both in the state of Montana: Clifford C. in 1885 and Frank S. in 1887. The Hedger home, located South of Babs Ave and North of the Yakima River was considered the showplace of the area. The property is now owned by the Carnahan family. The envelopes containing these two photographs indicate they were taken two different years, but similarities in the photos suggest they were taken on the same day. |

| Description | A group of about 8 women and girls picking strawberries. They all wear broad brimmed sunbonnets. One woman wearing a straw hat appears to be overseeing the group. A row of fruit trees borders the strawberry field, and a man can be seen working amongst the trees. This photo was taken south of Babs Avenue, formerly named Hedger Ave. The Yakima River (unseen) runs between the field and the hill. The low rounded hill on the left was cut into a cliff to accommodate the present day interstate highway I-82. A cut into the bank near the bottom of the same hill is likely the Northern Pacific Railroad bed. The road up McBee Grade can be faintly seen near the top of the hills on the upper left side. The Horse Heaven Hills rise up behind. The hills are an anticlinal ridge formed of Columbia River Flood Basalt. Written on envelope: “Picking strawberries Dr. Hedger ranch 1903.” |
